Drilling Hints

| Home || About Rocks |

Positioning: The drill rig must be firmly positioned to avoid unnecessary bending stresses and hole deviation. Use the weight of the rig to your advantage for optimum feed pressure and penetration rate.

Air Pressure: Recommended 100 psi or up to 7 bars for adequate chip removal and flushing of the holes.

Thread Grease: Wear is reduced if heat- resistant grease is applied to male and female threads. Keep the threads and grease protected from cuttings.

Rod circulation: Color- mark all rods and make sure that thread wear is evenly distributed in the drill string.

Rotation: button bits 32mm-51mm up to 100 revolutions per minute is recommended. Larger diameters up to 80 revolutions per minute.

If turning resistance against rock exceeds the torque of the drill, rotation becomes jerky or ceases, the feed force will have to be reduced.

Jamming: in soft rock or fissured rock. Use cross bits or retrac bits. Make sure that air flushing is adequate. Withdraw bit with impact and rotation-on and powerful flushing.
